April might be the single best month to visit Yunnan. Dali is in full bloom — pear blossoms, peach blossoms, and the iconic rapeseed fields at their peak. Lijiang's weather is near-perfect for exploring the old town and trekking. Xishuangbanna hosts the Water Splashing Festival — the Dai New Year celebration that's Yunnan's biggest ethnic festival. Kunming is lovely, and even Shangri-La begins to thaw. Just avoid the Labor Day holiday at month's end.

Travel Tips for April
If visiting Xishuangbanna for the Water Splashing Festival (April 13-15), waterproof EVERYTHING — you WILL get soaked. It's a joyful, city-wide water fight. Book Xishuangbanna flights and hotels months ahead for this period. Avoid traveling April 30-May 5 (Labor Day) unless you enjoy massive crowds at triple the usual prices.
