Best Destinations in July
The wettest month. The northwest corridor (Lijiang, Shangri-La) sees daily heavy rain that can obscure mountain views for days. Tiger Leaping Gorge is best avoided — trails become dangerously slippery. Dali is a good compromise — the rain is lighter and the old town has plenty of indoor cafes. Kunming stays manageable. Xishuangbanna is hot and humid but the rainforest experience is authentic. Shangri-La wildflowers peak in July-August despite the rain.

Travel Tips for July
If you must travel in July, base yourself in Kunming or Dali where rain disruption is minimal. The mushroom markets in Kunming are at their peak — try jizong (the 'chicken mushroom'), matsutake, and porcini. Book flexible accommodation — you may want to shift plans based on weather. Domestic summer holiday crowds arrive mid-July — book ahead.
Festivals & Events in July
Torch Festival (late July/August, 6th lunar month) — celebrated by Yi, Bai, and Naxi peoples. Bonfires, torch parades, and traditional dancing. Dali Old Town and Chuxiong have the biggest celebrations. One of Yunnan's most photogenic festivals.
