Best Destinations in December
December splits Yunnan in two: the tropical south is glorious, the alpine north is freezing. Xishuangbanna is at its absolute best — dry, warm, and green. Yuanyang terraces are in full mirror mode and December's clear winter light makes for the best photography of the year. Kunming is mild (8-15C) and decorated for the holiday season. Lijiang and Dali are cold but beautiful with snow-capped mountains. Shangri-La is very cold with possible snow — beautiful if you're prepared, miserable if you're not.

Travel Tips for December
For a winter trip, fly into Kunming, head south to Xishuangbanna and Yuanyang, and skip the northwest entirely unless you're prepared for near-freezing temperatures. Book Yuanyang for the Duoyishu sunrise — December has the most reliable clear mornings. Prices are low everywhere except Christmas/New Year at international hotels. Bring serious warm clothes for anywhere above 2,000m.
Festivals & Events in December
Christmas is not a public holiday in China but international hotels and some restaurants in Kunming put on festive events. New Year's Eve sees celebrations in larger cities. Overall December is festival-quiet, which means more authentic travel and lower prices.
